From now on, strategic themes are supported in the portfolio app.
A new tab has been added:
Manage strategic themes
On this new tab, strategic themes can be added using the “Add Strategic Theme: .” button;
If the portfolio is related to an enterprise portfolio, strategic themes can be added in 2 ways:
- Select strategic themes (not editable) from a related enterprise portfolio, or
- Create a new strategic theme. With this choice, the strategic theme is only available in the portfolio in which work is being done.
Relating a portfolio to enterprise portfolios can be done in the properties panel on the right side of the page.
Strategic themes can also be managed in this panel.
The name of a strategic theme can be changed by clicking on the theme at the top of the list:
Each strategic theme has a name, a short name and a color.
The short name consists of a 2 or 3 letter code. This code is automatically generated and can be modified afterwards. The color is also chosen automatically and is customizable.
The details of a strategic theme are customizable by clicking on the label at the top of the list or in the properties panel.
Creation of portfolio items under strategic themes
Portfolio items/initiatives can be added under each strategic theme. You can do this on the strategic theme tab at the bottom of each list.
Items can also be created on the portfolio funnel tab. Creation is the same way:
When items are created in a place other than the strategic theme tab, they do not yet have a link to a strategic theme. On the strategic themes tab, the item is then shown by default in the ‘No strategic theme’ list.
From this list, an item can be moved to the desired strategic theme.
Order of strategic themes on the kanban board
The ‘No Strategic Theme’ list is always present and thus cannot be removed. This list is always on the far right.
Related strategic themes of enterprise portfolios are always on the far left and are not editable in order. These lists can be recognized by showing at the top of the list the enterprise portfolio from which the theme originated.
Following the strategic themes derived from enterprise portfolios are the strategic themes of the portfolio. These themes are customizable in order. This can be done by clicking at the top of the list and dragging left or right with the mouse. The following can also be customized in the properties panel.
Indicators on the strategic themes and portfolio-funnel tabs
An indicator has been added at the top of each list that shows how many items are in a list.

On the portfolio funnel tab, each funnel phase was given additional detailed information, consisting of a name (already existed), short name and a sequence indicator.
The short name consists of a 2 or 3 letter code that is automatically generated. It is adjustable by clicking on the sequence indicator at the top of the stage.
On the strategic themes tab, this indicator is shown by default on the ticket of a portfolio item. This allows you to quickly have a picture of the status of the initiatives belonging to a particular strategic theme.
On the portfolio funnel tab, the strategic theme indicator is shown by default on a portfolio item’s ticket. Thus, on the funnel tab, you have a quick view of the strategic themes in which the initiatives contribute.
If no strategic theme is shown for an item, that item is on the strategic theme tab in the ‘No strategic theme’ list.
Strategic themes decoupling/removal
Strategic themes of an enterprise portfolio cannot be removed, but can be decoupled in the portfolio. Portfolio items that were in the disconnected strategic theme are moved to the ‘No strategic theme’ list.
Strategic themes created in the portfolio can be removed. Portfolio items that were in the deleted strategic theme are also moved to the ‘No strategic theme’ list.
Add via detail page
On the detail page of a portfolio item, the funnel phase and strategic theme fields have been added on the right. So adding or modifying the funnel or strategic theme to which an item belongs can also be done here.
Preselected filter for funnel phase and strategic theme
In the filter panel, the filters ‘Funnel phase’ and ‘Strategic theme’ are added by default. This allows easy filtering on these 2 fields.
In capacity planning tabs group by strategic theme
The capacity planning tabs already allowed grouping by funnel phase and an alphabetical list. It is now also possible to group by strategic theme. The grouping on the capacity planning tabs follows the same order of themes and portfolio items as on the strategic themes tab.
