Lessons learned
Introduction
What is the tab?
The Lessons learned tab is the log where learning points of the project are captured: what went well, what didn't, and what future projects should do differently. It works the same as the other project logs, such as Risks and Issues.
Who uses it?
Project managers and team members who record lessons during the project, and the PMO or other project managers who reuse them.
What value does it deliver?
Lessons are captured while they are fresh, during the project instead of only at the end, and can be shared, so the organization actually learns from its projects.
Working with lessons learned
Lessons learned work like all project logs:
- Click COLUMNS to choose which information to show, for example status, owner, and created date.
- Add a lesson with +, enter a description, and fill the relevant columns.
- Use filters and saved views for focus, and export the list: useful for sharing lessons in a project evaluation or with other projects.
- Add tasks to a lesson (e.g. updating a project model or template) on its detail page; these tasks automatically appear as cards on the project's Kanban board.
- The detail page can be tailored with segments; see Customize the log item detail page.
Best practices
- Record lessons during the project, not only at the close-out. Details fade quickly.
- Make lessons actionable: describe what to do differently next time, not just what happened.
FAQ

The task automatically appears as a card on the project's Kanban board.
How do I share lessons with other projects?
Export the list, or discuss the lessons in the project evaluation. Structural improvements can be secured in project models.
