Changes
Introduction
What is the tab?
The Changes tab is the log where change requests of the project are registered and tracked: proposed changes to scope, planning, budget, or quality. It works the same as the other project logs, such as Risks and Issues.
Who uses it?
Project managers who register and follow up changes, and the bodies that decide on them (e.g. Steering Committee or Change Board).
What value does it deliver?
A traceable register of all proposed changes, their impact, and their status, so decisions about the project are explicit and documented.
Working with changes
Changes work like all project logs:
- Click COLUMNS to choose which information to show, for example status, owner, and impact.
- Add a change with +, enter a description, and fill the relevant columns.
- Use filters and saved views for focus, and export the list to share it outside the project.
- Add tasks to a change (e.g. an impact analysis) on its detail page; these tasks automatically appear as cards on the project's Kanban board.
- The detail page can be tailored with segments; see Customize the log item detail page.
Tip: For changes that affect budget or capacity, combine the change log with the formal routes in FCC: a Request in the financial planning, a capacity Request, and the Approval workflows to record the decision making.
Best practices
- Register every substantial change, including rejected ones: the register documents the decisions.
- Record the impact (time, money, quality) before the change is decided on.
