Dashboard

Introduction

When you click on a dashboard tile in the Insights app, the dashboard opens. These dashboards are powered by embedded PowerBI reports, giving you interactive and real-time insights into your projects, programs, and portfolios.

Using dashboards

The functionality of the dashboards themselves (filters, drilldowns, navigation) is explained in detail in the PowerBI dashboard documentation. Please refer to that article for a step-by-step guide on how to interact with and analyze the data.

Performance settings

Horizon setting for entry data

You can limit how much historical data is loaded into Power BI dashboards by configuring the horizon. By default, data spans one year in the past to five years in the future. Narrowing this window speeds up dashboard refreshes and reduces the risk of timeouts with large datasets.

To configure the horizon:

  1. Open the Insights App.
  2. Go to Configure data set.
  3. Click Set horizon and adjust the start and end offsets.
  4. Refresh the dashboard to apply the change.

Resetting a dashboard to its default

You can reset an embedded Power BI dashboard to its default configuration directly from the dashboard interface.

  1. Open the Dashboard tab in the Insights App.
  2. Click the ⋮ menu in the top-right corner of the report.
  3. Select Reset report to default.

The dashboard reverts to the factory-standard report configuration. For more information on resetting portfolio dashboards from a model, see the Portfolio Dashboard article.

Visual calculations

Visual calculations let you add computed values to a Power BI visual (such as running totals, moving averages, or percentage-of-total) without modifying the underlying data model.

Adding a visual calculation

  1. Open a dashboard in edit mode.
  2. Right-click a visual (table, chart, matrix, etc.) and select New visual calculation.
  3. Choose a pre-built template or select Custom to write a DAX expression.

Available templates

TemplateDescription
Cumulative totalRunning sum across rows
Moving averageSliding-window average
Percentage of parent/totalValue relative to a group or grand total
Previous / next rowRow-to-row comparison

Custom DAX

For specialized needs, write a custom DAX expression. Visual calculations operate on the aggregated data already shown in the visual, so explicit aggregation functions are generally not needed.

Example: Profit = [Sales Amount] - [Total Cost]
