Calculations
Calculations fill custom fields automatically with computed values: sums over child objects, derived statuses, date logic, and more. They are configured on the custom field itself (the Calculated property) and written in XML.
Quick reference
- A calculation is configured in the Advanced section of the Edit custom field dialog: the Calculation (XML), an optional Calculation option, and Conditions for conditional logic. Use Recalculate custom field to recompute existing values.
- Calculations can aggregate data across the hierarchy (e.g. sum values of underlying projects on a portfolio) and reference other fields by their internal name (e.g. 'Custom42').
- Problems are flagged in the Customize fields tree and lists: orange = calculation warning (e.g. a slow or deprecated construct), red = calculation error (the calculation is invalid).
Full documentation
The complete reference for writing calculations is in the technical documentation:
- Calculations: concepts, XML structure, and the objects reference table.
- Common calculations: ready-made examples for frequent use cases.
- Calculation validations: what the warnings and errors mean and how to fix them.
Tip: After changing calculations, check the Customize fields tree for orange and red markings to catch warnings and errors early.
